The article below was intended as an opening salvo before we conducted a detailed examination of the CARR debacle. However the speed with which that impressive-looking edifice just vanished meant we decided CARR themselves just weren’t/aren’t worth expending our limited resources on. Mirrors Smashed, The Smoke Begins To Clear: Matthew Feldman Exits The CARR Circus

For some time, impressed by our ongoing investigations into Searchlight/Hope Not Hate, Fellows & a rapidly increasing number of ex-Fellows (very sexist) of CARR (Centre for Analysis of the Radical Right) headed until yesterday by ‘Emeritus Professor’ Matthew Feldman, have implored us to scrutinise this outfit too. This we have been doing, and the fruits of our labour will appear on this site, soon. CARR is an elusive entity: their massive on-line presence is to a large extent smoke & mirrors (hence the article title) in that contributors are not paid and CARR is in fact a company with no democratic structure or even the pretence of one.
Without pre-judging our final conclusions, a few points to mull over now, while ‘Fellows’ (especially female ones) quaff departmental champagne to celebrate the departure of Professor Ego:
1) Why do CARR claim to be a not-for-profit organisation when they are in fact a company, using the Community Interest Company (CIC) structural variation, rather than setting up as a Charity?
2) Could setting up as a CIC have been done to allow the two sole owners–Feldman & Dr William Allchorn currently–when future grants come rolling in to pay themselves a handsome salary while retaining control of CARR: regulated only by the (very) light touch CIC Regulator? Contributors to the academic laundromat that is the CARR web-site get sweet FA of course.
3) Why did Feldman leave Teesside University so precipitately, in the middle of an academic year? We have heard one very interesting explanation, but welcome more.
4) Why has Feldman been retained as a key Crown Prosecution Service specialist witness in numerous trials of neo-Nazi ‘terrorists’ when his actual grasp of the far right is so poor. Or is this a rhetorical question?
5) What will CARR’s resident gonk, the deeply uncharismatic Allchorn, do to gather up the shattered CARR fragments now Feldman has fallen on his toy sword? Will he accede to the demands of the 27-strong Rebel Alliance co-ordinated by Alexander Reid Ross & Monika Huebscher, thereby derailing his personal gravy train, given he hasn’t got a permanent job?
6) The CARR site currently states ‘Senior Fellows’ have a PhD “or higher”. What academic qualification is higher than a PhD? Do they mean the McDonalds 4-star badge? Way to go William!
